USA’s 250th is time for ERA

Opinion: USA’s 250th anniversary is time for ERA Equality for All

Elizabeth “Liz” Colton, Guest Opinion

After 250 years of USA history beginning with “all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence of 1776, women’s equality is still not included as an amendment to the U.S. Constitution in effect since 1789.

The time is now for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to be added to the Constitution. This Women’s History Month and during primary voting preceding this year’s November elections, it’s important we speak out again in support of equal rights for all.

Some people will say, “We thought the ERA was fully ratified, already added as 28th Amendment of the Constitution.” It’s ratified by enough states, but not certified. Still today there are only 27 amendments. [Read more…] about USA’s 250th is time for ERA

The ERA & LGBTQ+ Rights

June 13, 2025 by Audrey Muck 1 Comment

How the Equal Rights Amendment supports LGBTQ+ people

The ERA was originally penned in 1923 by Alice Paul and rewritten in 1943 to read:

“Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.”

The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification.

When the ERA finally met all of the criteria under Article V of the Constitution in 2020 with Virginia becoming the 38th state to ratify the Amendment, the fear and fight against application of the amendment for the LGBTQ+ community heightened. [Read more…] about The ERA & LGBTQ+ Rights

New bills affirm 28th Amendment to U.S. Constitution, urge N.C. to ratify ERA

North Carolina Rep. Julie von Haefen and Sen. Natalie Murdock introduced bills affirming the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment and urging North Carolina to become the 39th state to ratify.

The ERA was fully ratified in January 2020, and has been affirmed as the 28th Amendment by the American Bar Association and respected constitutional scholars.

Rep Julie von Haefen“I am proud to be the primary House sponsor of this bill for the fourth consecutive session,” said Rep. von Haefen. “Some people may ask why our state still needs to pass a bill regarding the ERA after Virginia became the final state necessary for ratification in 2020. Action: Rescind Barr Memo

November 7, 2021 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

Urge the Office of Legal Counsel to rescind Barr memo to Archivist

Christopher Schroeder is the new Assistant Attorney General overseeing the Office of Legal CounselTake action! The ERA-NC Alliance urges everyone to immediately ask Christopher Schroeder, left, the newly appointed Assistant Attorney General overseeing the Office of Legal Counsel, to rescind the 2020 memo to the National Archivist. That memo, sent during U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr’s tenure, effectively stopped National Archivist David Ferriero from publishing the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The ERA met all constitutional requirements when Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify on January 27, 2020.

ERA-NC Alliance to stand vigil June 29-30 in D.C.
to protest AG Garland’s inaction on women’s rights

Washington, D.C. — Frustrated by Attorney General Merrick Garland and President Joe Biden’s inaction on the long-awaited Equal Rights Amendment, members of the ERA-NC Alliance will stand vigil June 29 and 30 as Silent Sentinels outside the Department of Justice in protest. National organizers Equal Means Equal, which began the vigil June 10, have vowed to continue until Garland and Biden act on the ERA. Advocates nationwide have joined the vigil.

Garland has failed to order National Archivist David Ferriero to accept Virginia’s ratification of the ERA and to publish the ERA as the 28th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
