2024 Candidate Survey

June 18, 2024 by Audrey Muck 3 Comments

Every two years, the ERA-NC Alliance reaches out to EVERY North Carolina candidate running for Congress, the General Assembly and NC Council of State to determine their support for the Equal Rights Amendment. This year our survey is being conducted online, with follow up phone calls and visits to collect as complete a picture of candidates’ support for the ERA as possible before we all cast our votes in November.

A green checkmark means the candidate will co-sponsor and vote for the resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Many candidates also returned comments with their survey.

If the candidates on your ballot haven’t responded yet, ask them to respond to the survey! A request from a voter in their district may be all it takes to spur them to action.

Action: Rescind Barr Memo

November 7, 2021 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

Urge the Office of Legal Counsel to rescind Barr memo to Archivist

Christopher Schroeder is the new Assistant Attorney General overseeing the Office of Legal CounselTake action! The ERA-NC Alliance urges everyone to immediately ask Christopher Schroeder, left, the newly appointed Assistant Attorney General overseeing the Office of Legal Counsel, to rescind the 2020 memo to the National Archivist. That memo, sent during U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr’s tenure, effectively stopped National Archivist David Ferriero from publishing the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The ERA met all constitutional requirements when Virginia became the 38th and final state needed to ratify on January 27, 2020.

Silent Sentinels

July 5, 2021 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

Several members of the ERA-NC Alliance attended the ongoing protest at the U.S. Department of Justice to encourage Attorney General Merrick Garland to remove former AG Bill Barr’s memo blocking the national archivist from publishing the ERA as the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Here are a few photos from our days standing sentinel at the DOJ:

Press Release: ERA Sentinals

ERA-NC Alliance to stand vigil June 29-30 in D.C.
to protest AG Garland’s inaction on women’s rights

Washington, D.C. — Frustrated by Attorney General Merrick Garland and President Joe Biden’s inaction on the long-awaited Equal Rights Amendment, members of the ERA-NC Alliance will stand vigil June 29 and 30 as Silent Sentinels outside the Department of Justice in protest. National organizers Equal Means Equal, which began the vigil June 10, have vowed to continue until Garland and Biden act on the ERA. Advocates nationwide have joined the vigil.

Garland has failed to order National Archivist David Ferriero to accept Virginia’s ratification of the ERA and to publish the ERA as the 28th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

ERA-NC Alliance condemns racial injustice

June 8, 2020 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

ERA-NC Alliance condemns racial injustice, pledges to fight for equality for all

We want to say loud and clear that Black Lives Matter. Now more than ever this statement cannot be ignored. The ERA-NC Alliance stands with our Black sisters and brothers in denouncing the brutality and oppression that far too many have endured. The recent events have shown that not acknowledging and glossing over systemic racism has created a perfect storm of incidents where Black lives have been lost, only to end with little to no justice.

Throughout our country’s history, racism and sexism have gone hand in hand. Some of the most vocal abolitionists were women who saw the parallels in their fight against slavery with the lack of their own rights. As the civil rights movement erupted in the 60s, so did the Second Wave women’s movement’s fight for equality. Racism and sexism are so deeply embedded in our culture that we are unaware of them until a spark ignites a flame of anger and protest.

Every parent of a Black child in this country has reason to fear for their children’s lives. The #SayHerName campaign has highlighted Black girls as young as 7 and Black women as old as 93 who have been killed by the police.

Board member Jillian Riley at a recent Black Lives Matter protest in GreensboroBlack women have been the backbone of the women’s movement, despite the frustrations expressed by many that their issues have not been in the forefront of concern.

The women’s movement has been passive and complicit for far too long, and we intend to be on the right side of history. We must fight for equality for all Americans if we are to truly achieve equality for all women. For all to be free, the fight against racism and sexism must be interconnected. Our nation is not a democracy until ALL of our citizens are treated equally in the eyes of the law. Regardless of our race, our ethnicity, our gender, our religion or our sexuality, every one of us should have the same rights and laws protecting us as do those who seek to govern us.

The ERA-NC Alliance condemns ALL forms of racism and injustice. We pledge to be inclusive in the fight for equality for all marginalized communities. We stand together in this fight.

Please join the national ERA Coalition’s virtual Town Hall on the Equal Rights Amendment and its impact on girls and women of color at 5 p.m. Eastern, Thursday, June 18. You can register HERE.
