August 25, 2025 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

Commemorate Women’s Equality Day with the ERA-NC Alliance

Aug 26, 2025 01:00 PM Eastern Time
Rachel Feldman is the director and screenwriter of the dramatic film, LILLY, about Lilly Ledbetter's fight for equal pay.
Rachel Feldman

Please join the ERA-NC Alliance’s candid conversation on the gender pay gap with  Rachel Feldman, director and screenwriter of the film “LILLY.”  LILLY is a powerful dramatic film based on the true story of working-class hero, Lilly Ledbetter, whose fight for equal pay went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. We’ll also discuss bills that would guarantee equal pay currently pending at the N.C. General Assembly.

This is not a screening of “LILLY.”  You can prepare for this event by learning more about the film at www.lillymovie.com. You can rent or buy LILLY on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and other streaming sites.

Did you miss our live event? You can still watch it on our YouTube channel!

The ERA & LGBTQ+ Rights

How the Equal Rights Amendment supports LGBTQ+ people

The ERA was originally penned in 1923 by Alice Paul and rewritten in 1943 to read:

“Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.”

The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification.

When the ERA finally met all of the criteria under Article V of the Constitution in 2020 with Virginia becoming the 38th state to ratify the Amendment, the fear and fight against application of the amendment for the LGBTQ+ community heightened. [Read more…] about The ERA & LGBTQ+ Rights

May 12, 2025 by Audrey Muck Leave a Comment

Sipping and Painting in WilmingtonWe’ve had some great Sip-n-Paint fundraisers for the ERA-NC Alliance this summer in Wilmington, Chapel Hill and Greensboro!

Don’t miss out! Register for our last event in Raleigh (details below)! Enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks, grab your brushes and help us raise funds for some exciting events we’re planning. We’re partnering with Wine & Design for these events. They provide the space, the art supplies and a painting instructor; we’re providing the first few bottles of wine (so you may want to bring some along as well!) and snacks.

Who are you inspired by … Frida Kahlo? Georgia O’Keeffe? Mary Cassatt? Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a famous artist to pick up some brushes and join us for a fun gathering! Visit our Facebook page for photos from past events. We can’t wait to see your works of art!

ERA Bills Filed at the NCGA

March 27, 2025 by Audrey Muck 1 Comment

House and Senate bills for North Carolina to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment were introduced this week. You can read them on the NCGA’s website:

H500: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2025/H500
S438: https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2025/S438

Please thank the bill co-sponsors – they are our ERA Champions! Both bills were referred to their respective Rules Committees, where bills unfortunately tend to die of neglect.

Ross Nethery was kind enough to video the press conference, you can find that on our Facebook page, and we’ll post video from the NCGA video feed on our YouTube page soon.

New bills affirm 28th Amendment to U.S. Constitution, urge N.C. to ratify ERA

North Carolina Rep. Julie von Haefen and Sen. Natalie Murdock introduced bills affirming the Equal Rights Amendment as the 28th Amendment and urging North Carolina to become the 39th state to ratify.

The ERA was fully ratified in January 2020, and has been affirmed as the 28th Amendment by the American Bar Association and respected constitutional scholars.

Rep Julie von Haefen“I am proud to be the primary House sponsor of this bill for the fourth consecutive session,” said Rep. von Haefen. “Some people may ask why our state still needs to pass a bill regarding the ERA after Virginia became the final state necessary for ratification in 2020.
